Feature and Follow: Stepping out of Genre

Q: Jumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don’t like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

I don’t think I would say that I pick up a genre I don’t like and love it, it is more that I have a book recommended to me in a genre I am not familiar with, and then I look for things similar.

I have a friend who I can no longer listen to about books. Why? Because when I do, things happen. Like picking up Twilight at her insistence, before Twilight was an epidemic. Reading it cover to cover. Closing it, telling my husband to order something for dinner, I wasn’t cooking as I grabbed my keys, hurried to the car and beelined for Barnes and Noble to pick up a copy of New Moon, with the foresight to grab Eclipse while I was there.

Or the time I got this tiny brown package in the mail, and opened it to find Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander. At least Twilight occupied my every waking thought for a week or so, and then mild daydreaming and wondering afterwards. No, Outlander is long. Really long. And good, oh so so good. I disappeared for months.

So now, I try very hard not to listen to her. And the next time she says, “You have to read this book!” I will curse her all the way to the bookstore. Because I love her like that, all while hating her. Thank you Nue!

My husband has introduced me to Fantasy, were it not for him I wouldn’t have given Harry Potter or Sword of Truth or G R R Martin a chance. Alex Cross and I were quite content together, (Who my mother introduced me to by the way.)

But all those mentioned above, were in genre’s that at the time I was encouraged to read them, they were not something I normally would have gravitated towards.
